A coaching program designed for psychologists who want to extend their professional knowledge and skills in coaching techniques, deepen their understanding and experience of coaching practice, and integrate coaching into their practice.
Coaching for Psychologists is a focused program covering:
-
Introduction to coaching, coaching psychology and coaching competencies
-
Developing the coaching alliance
-
Assessing and developing an understanding of your client
-
Basic approaches to coaching interventions - goal focused approaches and cognitive behavioural coaching
-
More advanced approaches to coaching techniques including ACT, narrative, and positive psychological interventions
-
Applications of coaching including leadership, executive coaching, personal growth and development, and organisational change
-
Multiple opportunities to observe, practise and receive feedback on your coaching.
-
Coaching demonstrations, case studies and extensive resources and relevant literature
The program will combine online learning with six workshops - in person for Sydney and on-line for others - that will provide facilitated group discussions, demonstrations, and opportunities to practise and receive supportive feedback on your coaching skills. The on line content will provide the principles, models, and techniques for psychologists to extend their current professional capabilities into an evidence-based practice of coaching.
Participants will be required to apply course lessons through coaching practice with at least 2 individual coachees.
Participants will receive 1:1 coaching sessions with the program facilitator between workshops.
The program will run over several months and involves a total commitment of approximately 30 hours.
The program author and facilitator is David Heap, a leading organisational and coaching psychologist with over thirty years of professional experience. He is deeply experienced in coaching executives and senior professionals to improve their leadership, personal performance, and career success. He has worked for Deloitte, KPMG, Right Management and PA Consulting Group as well as founding and running several consulting firms. He has been the Chair of the APS College of Organisational Psychologists and the National Convenor of the APS Interest Group in Coaching Psychology. David is an Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University, he was head of the Coaching and Management streams at ACAP and taught Executive MBA students at AGSM.
The next program will start in March 2024. We will call for expressions of interest in February.

"Over the past few months, I’ve been diving deeper into what it means to coach as a psychologist through the Coaching for Psychologists program.
This program provided a great forum to unpack the nuances and layers of our practice while learning from and alongside an incredible group of professionals.
Big thank you to David Heap for holding the space so well and to my peers for being so open and eager to share your learnings and experiences."
